Tony Gomes Has Tough Ending at Pacific Sprint Cup in Chico, CA

PETERSEN MEDIA- Tony Gomes and C&M Motorsports took part in the opening night of the 69th Gold Cup Race of Champion last Wednesday night in Chico, CA. Amidst a fast racing surface, Gomes looked to make a run through the loaded field however an early incident caused extensive damage to his mount and ended his night early.

“Wednesday night didn’t quite go as we hoped,” Tony Gomes said. “It was a loaded field of cars, and we qualified sixth in our group. Qualifying has been up and down for us this year, but we have continued to race well so I was confident moving forward.”

With 14 cars in each qualifying group, the Modesto, CA drivers sixth quick effort lined him up in the third row of his heat race. Getting up as high as third in the race, yellow flags negated some of his movement, but he was still able to finish fifth and lock directly into the 35-lap feature event.

Taking the green flag from the 19th starting position, Gomes got off to a nice start as he was able to slowly work his way forward instantly.

Working into 14th on the third lap, Gomes looked to get on on the fourth lap but trouble ensued.

Running in thick traffic, Gomes went to avoid another car as they battled for the same real estate, and has he did that he got sucked up the track and made big contact with the front stretch wall.

Not knowing the severity of the impact, Gomes went to the work area, but it was discovered the damage was too much to continue on and his night came to an end.

“I made a mistake trying to work through traffic and it cost us big time,” Tony Gomes said. “I am disappointed how our night ended, and I hate it for Cody, Mandi, and everyone that supports us. We do have some time off to prepare for Trophy Cup, and that is another race I am looking forward to.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.

ON TAP: C&M Motorsports and Tony Gomes are idle for a few weeks, as their next event will be the Trophy Cup in Tulare, CA October 19-21.
