Tony Gomes Hard Charges to 5th Place Finish at Placerville Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning to point race action at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night, Tony Gomes overcame issues in his heat race and charged from 17th to finish fifth in the track’s penultimate winged 360ci race of the season.

“The night started off really well, but in our heat race I got into a bad spot and it resulted in a DNF,” Tony Gomes said. “We had a fast car, and that showed as we won the ‘B’, and charged from 17th to 5th in the feature.”

With 25 cars on hand after an extended break from point racing at the track, Gomes kicked the night off by timing the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7c in third quickest in qualifying time trials.

Lining up in the second row of his heat race, a couple of negated starts finally saw the race come to life. Racing out of turn four contact ensued between Gomes and another competitor, and in turns one and two the front end gave way as Gomes spun around a brought out the yellow.

Despite the crew giving it a valiant effort in the work area, Gomes’ heat was over and he was forced into the ‘B’, which he did go on to win going away.

Lining up from the ninth row for the 25-lap feature event, Gomes quickly worked his way forward as he was in 11th on the fourth lap and looking for a way into the Top-10.

Up to seventh on the sixth lap, Gomes was in sixth a lap later as the race got into a steady flow on the slick Placerville Speedway surface. Working into fifth on the 18th lap, Gomes was in a three-car battle with the two other Championship hopefuls as they battled for positions fourth-sixth.

Continuing to battle as the laps clicked off, Gomes took the checkered flag with a fifth-place finish and sits just 22 points out of the lead in the season long point standings heading into next weekend’s finale.

“I feel very good about our car heading into the finale, and if we can carry the same speed into this weekend’s race we should have a very fun night,” Gomes added. “Thanks to Cody and Bobby for working so hard on Saturday night, and thanks to Cody and Mandi for their continued support. We also all want to wish our good buddy John the best as he goes in for surgery this week.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
