Tony Gomes Earns Davy Thomas Hard Charger Award at Forni-Humphreys Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA- Though he would have preferred to be on the top of the podium celebrating his second career Forni-Humphreys Classic win on Saturday night, Tony Gomes still earned quite the consolation prize as his charge form from 18th to 8th earned him the Davy Thomas Hard Charger Award that was lucrative in its own right.

“Saturday got off to a great start for the team, but I made a mistake in the heat race that put us in a hole,” Tony Gomes said. “We had a great car all night, so we were able to dig out and to earn the Davy Thomas Hard Charger Award in honor of our fallen brother is pretty cool.”

With 35 cars checked in to Placerville Speedway on Saturday night, Tony Gomes and the C&M Motorsports team got off to a quick start as the Modesto, CA pilot timed the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7C in fifth fastest in his qualifying flight.

Lining up on the front row of his heat race, a unique track on this night saw a cushion build in one and two about halfway up the track surface. Charging into one and two when the heat went green, Gomes caught it wrong and nearly got his mount upside down as he brought his entry to a stop and was forced to the back of the pack.

Finishing sixth in his heat, Gomes was forced into the semi, where he lined up in the fifth position with only four transfers into the $8585-to-win feature event up for grabs.

On the slick surface, Gomes was able to make a couple of big moves early as he worked his way into the second position. Hanging on to finish second, Gomes was safely in the 30-lap feature but he was mired deep in the field as he rolled off from the 18th starting position.

Following a rework on the racing surface prior to the feature event, Gomes was set as he took the green from the 18thstarting position. As the race came to life it quickly got into a great rhythm as laps began clicking off in rapid fire fashion with no stoppages.

Working his way forward, Gomes was just outside of the Top-10 when the red flag was needed on the 18th lap. Once the action resumed, he continued his fight forward as he was able to get by the likes of Andy Forsberg and Bubba DeCaires as he moved into eighth in the closing laps.

As the laps wound down, Gomes staked his claim inside the Top-10 and capped his charge off with a run from 18th to 8thto earn the Davy Thomas Hard Charger and take home over $2000 in doing so.

“As we get down to the end of the point season you do start looking at the points battle and for us we salvaged a few points and gained on the three drivers that are ahead of us,” Gomes added. “I really want to thank Cody, Mandi, and the guys for their continued faith in me, and staying positive when things get a little tough.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
