PETERSEN MEDIA: Joel Myers Jr and Hayward Motorsports had another busy week as they took part of Maverick Mayhem in Indiana with the upstart Winged Maverick Sprint Car Series as well as the IRA Sprint Car Series. Running in three of the four races, a New Track Record and a sixth-place finish at Lincoln Park Speedway highlighted the week of action.
“It has been great getting to a lot of new tracks and adapting quickly,” Joel Myers Jr said. “Noah West and I have been gelling and figuring each other out and we have some good speed at these new places.”
Four-race stretch through Indiana kicked off on Thursday night at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, IN. The Sebastopol, CA driver got off to a great start as he established a New Track Record at the bullring aboard the SHITI Coolers/Eddie Gillstrap Motors backed No. 19 entry.
Running second in his heat race, Myers Jr was locked into the feature event where he took the green flag from the seventh starting position. Getting a good start to the feature event, Myers Jr was up into fourth on the first lap, but as action moved quickly on the short track, he was back to sixth on the seventh lap.
Working around the LPS surface, Myers Jr searched both high and low as he ran well inside the Top-10. When the feature event drew to a close, Myers Jr capped the opening night of Maverick Mayhem off with a sixth place finish.
Friday night the scene shifted to Bloomington Speedway in Bloomington, IN where Myers Jr timed in 12th fastest in time trials before advancing from sixth to fourth in his heat race and again locking into the feature event.
Taking the green flag from the ninth row, Myers Jr night was cut short as he got upside down on the second lap leading to extensive damage.
Going over the wreckage, the team ultimately made the decision to skip Saturday’s event to put their spare car together for Sunday’s event in Terre Haute, IN.
Getting off to a sluggish start at The Action Track, Myers Jr and company went to work to made adjustments for their heat race. Going from ninth to seventh in his heat, Myers Jr moved into the ‘B’ where he lined up back in 10th.
Having a great run on the famed ½ mile, Myers Jr worked his way up to third and punched his ticket inot the feature event.
Lining up 22nd on the starting grid for the 20-lap feature event, Myers Jr continued his surge forward when the feature came to life.
Working into 16th in just five laps, Myers Jr was in 14th when the cross flags were displayed to field.
Continuing to fight forward, the 18-year-old was in 11th on the 14th lap, and made a brief appearance in the Top-10 by lap 16.
Falling back to 12th with three laps left in the race, Myers Jr was able to work into the 11th spot on the 19th lap where he went on to cap his night off.
“Aside from qualifying Sunday night, we were really good on a really tricky track,” Myers Jr said. “It definitely gives you confidence to have speed and move forward getting to these tracks for the first time, and it has us all excited as we continue to progress. A big thank you to Brodie Hayward and everyone that is associated with this team.”
