Mechanical Issues Slow Dawson Hammes as He Eyes Marysville Championship This Coming Saturday Night

PETERSEN MEDIA: Finally getting back to points racing at Marysville Raceway, Dawson Hammes briefly had a shot to gain valuable points on the current point leader, and his younger brother, Carson Hammes on Saturday night. Unfortunately, a mechanical issue saw him retire one lap after his brother was forced off the track which creates a tight championship battle at this Saturday’s finale.

With 24 cars on hand at Marysville Raceway on Saturday night for the first of two consecutive weeks to close out the track’s regular season, Hammes timed the Movement Brewing/STS Farming backed No. 55D in seventh fastest in qualifying time trials.

Lining up in the third starting position in heat race action, Hammes settled into third when the race came to life and held on to the position as the checkered flag flew. With his finish, Hammes missed out on the redraw, but still found himself in a good starting position for the feature as he took the green flag from the inside of the fifth row.

When the race came to life, Hammes endured his first issue of the feature event. With a car flipping in front of him, the Marysville, CA driver became collected in the accident himself and was forced into the work area.

With this team frantically repairing what they could, Hammes was able to make the call for the restart as he was now at the back of the pack for the 25-lap finale. Despite being mired in dense traffic from the rear of the field, Hammes was able to guide his Hammes Motorsports entry back into the Top-10 as the laps continued to tick down.

Seeing his younger brother have issues a few laps away from the finish, Hammes saw a golden opportunity to tighten the championship battle up heading into next weeks’ finale. Unfortunately, the following lap Dawson Hammes too had his own issues as was forced to give up the ninth position on the 23rd lap and was officially credited with a 13th place finish.

With Carson finishing 14th, Dawson heads into this week’s finale just 15 points out of the top spot.

“It was a tough night for our entire team,” Hammes said. “I do want to thank my family, Hunter, Cody, Cole, Jeremiah, and Samuel for all of their help as well as all of our sponsors for making this all possible.”

Hammes Motorsports would like to thank Movement Brewing, STS Farming, All About Fire Protection, Summit Partners Burbank Agency, Escalera Inc, Harper Inc., Rock Crushing Solutions, Shane Matthews Transport, and Ace Attorney Services for their continued support.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 16, Wins: 2, Top 5’s: 6, Top 10’s: 10
