PETERSEN MEDIA: After going undefeated with the War of the Wings Series and claiming the 2023 series title in convincing fashion, Joel Myers Jr needed some late race heroics on Saturday evening to defend his crown and he did just that as he made a brilliant move to net his third win of the year and capture another crown.
“I have never quite won a race like that on the last lap, so to do it and capture a title at the same time is really special and something I will always remember,” Joel Myers Jr said. “I actually got turned with about 10-laps left in the race, and I thought it may have taken us out of contention.’
Checking in at Ellesmere Speedway on Saturday afternoon for the final War of the Wings event of the 2024 season, Myers entered with a 30-point cushion over the competition, but the championship battle was far from over.
Timing in sixth quickest in qualifying time trials, the Sebastopol, CA driver raced his way to a win in his first heat race, and backed it up with a fourth place finish during his second and final heat.
Finding himself on the front row of the feature event, Myers Jr looked to pick up consecutive wins to cap off his second consecutive series championship and he got off to a picture-perfect start.
Jumping out to the lead, Myers Jr set a torrid pace on the slick racing surface as he quickly reached the back of the pack. Working his way through traffic, Myers was not quite able to gap his closest competitors as he had hoped, and it tightened up the battle for the race’s top spot.
With 10-laps left in the feature event, contact ensued in a battle for the lead an it resulted in Myers Jr spinning his machine to a stop as he relinquished the lead and was forced to the tail end of the lead lap cars.
Getting his elbows up, Myers Jr fought his way forward and was quickly back into third with just a couple of laps remaining, but he wanted to more as the leader ran through traffic.
Taking the white flag in third, Myers Jr closed a massive gap on the top two as he raced through turns one and two, and as he kept his car wound up on the cushion, he went from third to first as they raced into turn three, and went on the pick up the win and the championship in thrilling fashion.
“When I took the white flag in third, I didn’t think I really had a chance because they had a decent gap on me,” Myers Jr said. “I sailed it into turn one and made up a ton of ground and didn’t lose any speed on exit. I kept my foot in it, and it paid off getting into turn three and I was able to drive around them and a lapped car to grab the win and the title.”
