PETERSEN MEDIA: Off and running in 2021, Kyle Offill and the Country Builders Racing team made the trip to Kern County Raceway on Friday and Saturday night for the inaugural I-5 Classic where Offill would finish 12th on Friday night, before running 19th on Saturday night.
“Friday night started off really well, but we just kind of missed it a little in the feature,” Offill said. “Unfortunately, those feature event struggles from Friday followed us into Saturday night. There were some bright spots though, and I am looking forward to taking what we learned to Hanford, CA this weekend.”
Kicking the weekend long event off on Friday night, Offill would time the Country Builders/Ochoco West Lumber/Reliable Lumber backed No. 88 machine in third fastest in his qualifying group.
Running second in his heat race, the Tracy, CA driver would transfer directly into the feature event where he would take the green flag from the ninth starting position.
When the race got underway, Offill would hold down his position inside the Top-10 but would slowly start to struggle with his exit on both ends of the track. Trying to solve the problem by changing his lines up, Offill would continue to lose traction out of turn two and four, and it resulted in him slipping back to a 12th place finish.
Returning to the speedway on Saturday night, Offill would time his mount in ninth fastest in his qualifying group before finishing seventh in his heat race.
Forced into the semi, Offill would work his way up to a fifth-place finish. Though originally not good enough to make the transfer, Offill would have a little luck on his side as a Dash car would be unable to make the call, giving Offill a ticket into the feature event.
Starting from the tail end of the field, Offill would get going as he would pick up a few positions as he danced through traffic. Getting up to the 18th position, Offill’s right-rear would start to lose life.
Trying to hang on, Offill would lose a few positions in the closing laps as he capped his weekend off with a 19thplace finish.
“Brandon Ikenberry did a great job for us, and I really felt good in the Saturday night feature,” Offill said. “I think we hit on something that felt good to me, that we can start with this weekend, and hopefully build from there.”
Kyle Offill would like to thank Country Builders, Ochoco West Lumber, Reliable Lumber, Boise Cascade, Inc., B rown and Miller, MAAS Brothers Powder Coating, Offill Family Farms, Tool Tech Construction Supply, HRP, FK Shocks, A.R.T. Enterprise, Hinchman Racewear, Maxim Chassis, and B. Scadden Design for their continued support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 3, Wins: 0, Top 5’s: 0, Top 10’s: 1
