PETERSEN MEDIA- After a couple of races being shut out of victory lane, Justin Sanders and Dale Miller Motorsports found themselves in familiar territory at Silver Dollar Speedway on Wednesday night as Sanders opened the 70th Gold Cup Race of Champions with a hard fought victory.
“We had a really fun race with Kyle Larson going, and its fun to race with him,” Justin Sanders said. “It is great to get this car back in victory lane, and to do it during the Gold Cup makes it that much more special.”
With 50 cars checked into Silver Dollar Speedway on Wednesday night, Sanders got his week kicked off by timing the Anrak/Thompson’s Family of Dealerships/North County Plastering backed No. 4SA in third fastest in his qualifying flight.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, the Aromas, CA driver got the jump when the green lights flashed and he pulled away in convincing fashion. Picking up the win, Sanders locked into the Dash where the two put him on the front row of the six lap shootout.
Running second in the Dash to Larson, Sanders found himself in a great spot for the feature as he took the green flag from the outside of the front row.
When the race came to life, Sanders briefly drifted back to third until he raced into second on the race’s fifth lap. In second, the pursuit of Larson began as Larson looked to keep his personal win streak alive.
As the battle heated up late in the race, the duo battled through traffic and close quarters racing resulted in Larson getting out of shape and getting off the racing surface as Sanders took command of the race.
Leading the final six-laps of the race, Sanders was able to park in victory lane for the sixth time in 10 tries with Dale Miller Motorsports in 20224.
“I am thankful for Dale and Tara Miller, and all of the great people that support the No. 4SA car,” Sanders added. “Also, a big thank you to everyone who helped us in the pit area all night long on Wednesday night.”
