Cox Fifth at Platinum Cup

Cox Fifth at Platinum Cup

PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking part in the Platinum Cup during the 67th Gold Cup Race of Champions, Justyn Cox was able to lock into Saturday’s feature following a turbulent preliminary night, and ultimately capped the weekend with a fifth-place finish.

“It was a lot of fun to take part in the Platinum Cup and share the stage with the Outlaws over the weekend,” Justyn Cox said. “I was really happy with how things went back in the family car after some time away from it, and have to thank Rodney, and everyone that helps us out.”

Cox took to the track on Wednesday for his preliminary night, looking to tabulate enough points to lock into the Saturday night feature event. With 30-cars checked in for the opener, Cox would time the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/MDW backed No. 31c entry in second fastest in his time trials group.

Racing to a win in his heat race, Cox moved into the nightly redraw where the four pill put him in the second row for the 30-lap feature event. During heat race action, Cox felt something going array on his entry, so the team went to work before pushing off for the feature.

Not getting the issue rectified, Cox would have his hands full in the main as he would slip back to eighth, it what turned into a wild race. Having some breaks go his way, Cox would keep his car in the Top-10, as he closed his night out with an eighth-place finish and sat 10th in event points.

Following Thursday’s prelim, Cox still sat 10th in points, and he was safely locked into the fifth row of Saturday night’s 30-lap feature event.

On a very racy surface on Saturday, Cox would have his elbows up as he would get his Cox Family Racing entry working through the field. Getting into fifth, Cox would pressure Corey Day for the fourth position in the closing laps but could not make anything stick.

When the checkered flag was displayed to the field, Cox capped the weekend off with a fifth-place finish.

“It was kind of a bummer having a Torsion Bar go bad on us Wednesday night because that obviously kept us from really putting together a run and earning more points,” Cox said. “With that being said, still really proud of what our team accomplished against some really strong drivers.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Michael David Winery, Five Window Beer Company, MDW Sports, Cranked Naturals, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, VSR, , Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Don Ott Racing Engines, and Richmond Engines for their support in 2021!

BY THE NUMBERS: Races-9, Wins-0, Top 5’s-2, Top 10’s-6

ON TAP: Cox is now idle until the Fall Nationals which take place in Chico, CA on September 30th and October 1st.
