PETERSEN MEDIA: Continuing to pilot Brodie Hayward’s Shiti Coolers backed no. 19 entry, Joel Myers Jr took part in the back half of Ohio Speedweek and a fifth place finish on Friday night highlighted the busy stretch.
“It was great to get to so many different tracks for the first time last week, and really work on running in the slick,” Joel Myers Jr said. “We had some good runs, and we had some struggles, but Noah West and I are working well together.”
Wednesday night the team checked in at Sharon Speedway and the early part of the night was a bit of a struggle as Myers Jr struggled in qualifying and was unable to race out of his heat race and transfer into the feature.
Forced into one of the twin ‘B Mains’, the Sebastopol, CA driver made some noise as he raced into fourth and chased after one of the two transfers berths that were up for grabs in the Shiti Coolers/Eddie Gillstrap Motors/RPM Chassis backed entry.
Ending his night in the ‘B’, the team traveled to Muskingum County Speedway on Thursday night. Again, struggling in time trials, Myers Jr was able to successfully race out of his heat on this night before finishing 18th in the feature event.
Friday night saw the team make their way to Millstream Speedway as the Findlay, OH track was back operational after sitting dormant for a few years. Myers Jr took a liking to it as he timed in fifth fastest in his flight, before advancing to a third-place finish in his heat race.
Lining up 12th in the feature event, Myers Jr came to life late in the feature event. Working the bottom groove on the slick surface, the NZ Champ was able to slowly pick up ground with each passing lap.
When the checkered flag few, Myers Jr capped the night off with a fifth place finish.
Saturday night marked the final night of Ohio Speedweek, as well as the final night of action for the week for Hayward Motorsports. Checking in at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, OH, Myers Jr timed in sixth quickest in his qualifying group and then raced to 5th place finish in his heat race.
Locking into the feature event, Myers Jr rolled off the starting grid from the 19th starting spot. As the final race of the week came to life, Myers Jr slowly worked his way forward as he settled into 15th as laps clicked off.
A late caution stacked the field back up with just four laps to go, and the ensuing restart saw Myers Jr make a couple of bold moves as he forged his way to an 11th place finish to cap the week off.
“It is definitely a process to get used to these cars, the engines, and new tracks,” Myers Jr added. “We are definitely heading the right direction, and I am very much looking forward to another Speedweek setting this week.”
