PETERSEN MEDIA- Following up a Top-Five performance in his first winged start of the season one week ago, Jace Vander Weerd was fast again on Friday night as he finished sixth in the second King of Kings event of the 2017 season at Keller Auto Speedway.
“The car was really fast all night, and I was comfortable in it from the time we unloaded,” Jace Vander Weerd said.
Timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe backed No. 88v machine in ninth fastest in qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd would line up on the front row of his heat race.
Getting a good start in his heat, Vander Weerd would grab the lead heading into the first turn and would go on to pick up the win and advance into the night’s Dash. Pulling the four in the draw, the Visalia, CA pilot would line up in the second row of the six-lap shootout.
Jumping into the third position when the action picked up, Vander Weerd’s third place finish would line him up in the second row for the 30-lap ‘A’ Main event. As things came to life, Vander Weerd would slip back to the fifth spot as the field jockeyed for position the in opening laps.
Running well in the fifth spot, Vander Weerd would be forced to check up on the third lap as he was forced down into the infield and it would result in him falling back to sixth.
Continuing to run sixth, Vander Weerd would bicycle his machine through a rut on a restart and he would fall back to eighth. Back up to speed, Vander Weerd would get back to the seventh spot as he then chased after sixth running Cory Eliason.
Able to get back to sixth late in the race, Vander Weerd would take the checkered flag with his second consecutive winged Top-10 finish.
“I feel like our bad start hurt us,” Vander Weerd said. “We had a good starting position and with the way the track was, if I get off to a better start I really feel like we get another Top-Five.”
Jace and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2017.
