PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting back to racing action following rain last week in Nevada, Tony Gualda and C&M Motorsports followed the Sprint Car Challenge Tour to Tulare, CA on Friday night to take part in the Peter Murphy Classic where the Hollister, CA driver would fight through the ‘B’ and work his way up to a 14th place finish.
“We had a really good car, but I made a mistake in the heat race and it cost us for the rest of the night especially with the track taking rubber,” Tony Gualda said. “We still raced in to the feature from the semi and we flirted with a Top-10 but we got a late flat and ended up finishing 14th.”
Timing the Moorefield Construction, Inc./Hollister Auto Parts/PitStopUSA backed No. 7c machine in second quickest amongst the 52 cars checked into the pit area and second quickest in his group, Gualda would grid the field from the second row for his heat race.
A slick surface in heat race action saw the youngster settle into the fourth position as the race moved along. A restart would see Gualda make a bit of a mistake as he tried the bottom groove and it back fired as he would finish out of a transfer position and find himself in the semi.
Lining up on the pole of the ‘B’, Gualda would lay down 12 great laps as he picked up the win and put the PitStopUSA/PT Shocks/Swartz Diesel machine in the feature event though his work would be cut out for him as he would take the green flag from the 21st starting position on a track that was taking rubber.
With the track taking rubber towards the end of the USAC race, Gualda’s plan was to avoid any accidents and keep his tires underneath him as passing would be tough on this night.
Doing just that, Gualda was able to avoid a couple of big wrecks right in front of him, but was also able to make some moves in the early goings before the rubber really started going down. Working his way up to 11th late in the feature, Gualda would come up lame coming to the white flag as he had a right rear tire go flat.
Hanging on for the final lap, Gualda would lose some spots but still managed to take the checkered flag in 14th.
“It was unfortunate to see the track conditions like they were in the feature, but we still managed to make the best of it,” Gualda said. “It was a bummer to lose a tire there at the end, but we had speed and we did some really good things. I have to thank Cody and everyone for their hard work and the awesome racecar.”
The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Moorefield Construction, Inc., Hollister Auto Parts, PitStopUSA, PT Shocks, Swartz Diesel, Alturas Tires, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
ON TAP: Gualda and C&M Motorsports are still deciding on a plan for this weekend. They will for sure return to action on June 2nd in Placerville, CA.
2018 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-8, Wins-0, Top 5’s-2, Top 10’s-4.
