PETERSEN MEDIA- For the second time in three years Tarlton Motorsports was able to take home the big check and the big trophy following the Peter Murphy Classic. With Kyle Hirst winning it for the team in 2016, Shane Golobic would pass Hirst coming to the white flag on Saturday night to score the win for the team in 2018; marking his first career win at Thunderbowl Raceway.
“Our night could not have gone any better,” Shane Golobic said. “I mean we could have timed in a little better, but to come out on top of the Peter Murphy Classic is pretty special. The way things unfolded there at the end are a little controversial for some people, I guess, but we all ran the same amount of laps and I knew the Tarlton car would be pretty good.”
With 33 cars checked into the pit area on Saturday night for the fifth Annual Peter Murphy Classic, Golobic would time the Elite Landscape Construction/Tarlton and Son, Inc./Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino entry in 12th fastest in time trials Golobic would finish fourth in his heat race and transfer directly into the 30-lap feature event.
Lining up in the 12th starting position, Golobic would make some nice moves on the high banked speed plant as he was able to move forward despite the track taking rubber in the very early laps of the race.
Navigating his way forward, Golobic would crack the top-five by the race’s halfway point as laps clicked off quickly with the way track conditions were. A caution on the 27th lap would see Golobic restart in third as he chased after Kyle Hirst and Bud Kaeding.
Taking the white flag in the third position, the yellow lights would then flash and things would get interesting with a green, white, checkered finish to decided the outcome.
Running third, Golobic would continue to stay in the rubber as the battled for the lead heated up. With the two leaders racing hard, Golobic would get by both of them coming to the white flag, and he would hit his marks during the final lap as he captured his first career win at Thunderbowl Raceway.
“With all the rubber that was being laid down I really just tried to be patient and keep my tires underneath me,” Golobic said. “I saw the two of them battling in front of me and I kind pushed it a little harder and kept it in the rubber and it worked out. This is a race I have circled on the calendar every year and it is great to win this. I really have to thank Tom, Tommy, Paul, Tyrone, and everyone who works on this thing. They were patient with me through time trials and a rough heat, but we stuck with it and pulled through when it mattered.”
Tarlton Motorsports would like to thank Elite Landscape Construction, Tarlton and Son, Inc., Executive Auto Sales, Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, Yokut Gas, Pabco Gypsum, Bandy and Associates, All Star Performance, and BG Lubricants for their support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 6, Wins: 2, Top 5’s: 6, Top 10’s: 6.
