PETERSEN MEDIA: With California 410ci action being on a lengthy break, Sean Watts would be forced to shake off some rust as the World of Outlaws invaded Chico, CA over the weekend for the Gold Cup Race of Champions.
“It is kind of a bummer that we have such a long break and we get to come back racing the Outlaws,” Sean Watts said. “We had pretty good car speed most of the weekend, but no results to show for it. It is a continued work in progress and we will give it a go Wednesday night.”
Friday night at the Gold Cup opener, the Atwater, CA driver would time in 17th quickest in his qualifying group and put himself deep in a heat race. From the ninth starting position, Watts would chase after World of Outlaw regular, Logan Schuchart, as they raced for position before Watts finished eighth.
Lining up in the second row of the ‘C’, Watts would need to pick up a couple of positions to keep his night alive. Battling with Robbie Price and Greg Wilson, Watts would hold down the fourth position but it would not be enough as his Friday came to a close.
Saturday night brought on the Gold Cup finale, and Watts would come out with some speed early in the night. Though the track would start to go away before his time trial slot, Watts would end up 15th quickest in his flight on this night.
Finishing eighth in his heat race, Watts would find himself on the pole of the ‘C’ where he would again chase after one of two transfer positions into the Last Chance Show Down.
Being comfortable most of the night, Watts admitted that something was amiss as he was unable to make any grip and would lose positions. Slipping back through the field, Watts’ Gold Cup would end with an eighth place finish in the ‘C’.
“I thought we had a good chance to move on Saturday night, but for some reason we missed it or something went south in the car,” Watts added. “I felt decent all night up until then. All we can do now is learn from it and ready ourselves for Placerville Speedway.”
Sean and the Watts Rolfe Speed-Sports team would like to thank Grizzly Coolers, Schaeffer Racing Oil, Rolfe Construction, Billet America, Darrel Varni Electric, Kaeding Performance, Shannon Pumps, Stealth Homes, Tee’s and Tops, Team Simpson, Kistler Racing Engines, and Stan Yockey Motorsports for their continued support.
