PETERSEN MEDIA: Sneaking down to Arizona Speedway over the weekend to take part in the 4th Annual Copper Classic, Justin Sanders would make the trip count as he charged from 10th to third on Saturday night, before surging from 10th to win Sunday night’s finale and close his season out with 12 wins.
“It was awesome to get back down to Arizona and finally get a win at Arizona Speedway,” Justin Sanders said. “I really didn’t qualify well either day, but to come from 10th and podium the first night and win the second night is pretty cool.”
Saturday night the action got underway with the Aromas, CA driver timing the North County Plastering/Andy’s Construction/Yuba Sutter Aviation entry in 10th quickest in time trials.
Picking up a fourth-place finish in his heat race, Sanders moved into the feature event where he rolled off the starting grid from 10th. On the slick surface, Sanders would get his elbows up as he worked through the field and soon found himself in third.
Once in third, Sanders set his sights on the lead duo of Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson. Battling a bent ti-rod, Sanders would do all he could to reel the two leaders in. Keeping pace with them, Sanders couldn’t quite make anything happen as he capped the opener off with a very impressive podium run.
Sunday night’s Copper Classic finale again saw Sanders time in 10th quick to open the night up. Picking up a second-place finish in heat race competition on this night, the California native would again take the green flag from the 10th starting position.
Heading into the first set of turns when the race went green, a multi car pile-up would ensue and Sanders would make a couple of nice moves to avoid any of the carnage.
Moving into the eighth starting position when the race went green, Sanders would do another great job of slicing, and dicing his way through the field. Hooking up in a very entertaining battle with Christopher Bell for the second position, the two would thrill the crowd as they exchanged the second position lap after lap.
Finally clearing Bell, Sanders would take advantage of a late restart that saw him get by Hunter Schuerenberg in turns three and four and begin to open up a sizeable lead.
Keeping the rest of the field at bay, Sanders would close the night, and his season, out in victory lane as he ends the year with 12 wins.
“It took a lot of great people to make this entire year possible, and I have to thank each and everyone one of them for their continued support,” Sanders said. “I really want to thank North County Plastering, Andy’s Construction, Roadside 24hr Service, G&N Construction, Chandler Construction, Durden Construction, ICD Concrete Designs, Duppman Racing, and Sandblast Service for going above and beyond and making it possible for us to head down to Arizona and get one last race in.”
Justin and his team would like to thank North County Plastering, Andy’s Construction, Yuba Sutter Aviation, Roadside 24hr Service, Roger’s Diner, Factory Kahne, BG Labels and Tee’s, Walker Performance Filtration, Dixon and Son Tires, Ernie’s Service Center, East Lake Village, FK Rod Ends, Triple X Race Co., DMI, Keizer Wheels, Wings Unlimited, Ti64 Titanium, AIS Heating and Sheet Metal, Fred Lint and Family, JonSan Racing, Sandblast Service, G&N Construction, Wicked Cushion, Alkaline 88, and Steve Duppman Racing for their continued support in 2019.
