PETERSEN MEDIA: The 2018 Silver Cup marked the opening race week of the season for Justyn Cox. When it was all said and done the weekend didn’t go as hoped, but Cox still has a good feeling for the year ahead.
“Sometimes opening weekends can turn into a mess, and ours certainly did just that,” Justyn Cox said. “It is a bit of a bummer, but my guys worked hard all winter long, and we are confident we will have more good nights than nights like we had at Silver Cup.”
The curtain went up on Cox’s 2018 season Friday night in Chico, CA as he timed the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31c entry in ninth quickest in qualifying time trials.
Still shaking off a little off season rust, Cox would pocket a sixth place finish in heat race action on a hooked up and fast Silver Dollar Speedway racing surface. Moving into the feature event, Cox would roll off the grid from the 11th starting position.
With a great car underneath him, Cox would have a great opening lap as he surged up to the top five. The next lap would see him make a bid for the fourth spot, but he would clip a rut that had developed on the speedway and it would result in him getting upside down and ending his night.
Bouncing back from the rollover on Friday, Cox and company would return to action on Saturday night as Cox timed the PM Truck Repair/Justice Brothers/K&N Backed entry in seventh quickest in time trials before recording a fourth place finish in his heat race.
Moving into the Silver Cup feature event, Cox would take the green flag from the sixth starting position after having some luck in the redraw. In the race’s opening laps he would battle with eventual race winner, Andy Forsberg, for the third spot, but his night would be short lived as an oil leak would develop on the fourth lap and it would ultimately bring Cox’s night to an end.
“The positives from the weekend were that we had two pretty good cars in both feature events,” Justyn Cox said. “We were able to get our car better through the night both nights so that is something that is going to be huge as the year moves on. I have to thank my guys for all their hard work.”
The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2018!
2018 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-2, Wins-0, Top 5’s-0, Top 0’s-0
