PETERSEN MEDIA- Picking up 12th and sixth place finishes during the opening two rounds of USAC/CRA Sprint Week at Calistoga over the Labor Day Weekend, Richard Vander Weerd picked the series back up on Saturday night for the final round of action and had a bit of a tough night as he finished 14th.

“It was a weird night on Saturday,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “I just couldn’t get comfortable in the car, and we really weren’t able to do much at all.”

On a wet track early in the night for qualifying time trials, the Visalia, CA pilot timed the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe No. 10 machine in 18th quickest in qualifying time trials.

Lining up on the front row of his heat race on a very fast racing surface, Vander Weerd just couldn’t seem to get going as he struggled a bit slipping back to finish in the fourth spot.

Continuing to work on the Basic Industries/Factory Kahne Shocks/SWE entry, Vander Weerd would look to make some noise in the feature event as he took the green flag from the 18th starting position.

With the track still hooked up, Vander Weerd just never was able to get going as he ran towards the back of the pack for the duration of the 30-lap affair. Trying a few different things, Vander Weerd was able to make a little headway as he ended his night with a 14th place finish.

“It certainly was not our best night, and I am not sure why we struggled so much,” Vander Weerd said. “We will go to work the next couple of weeks and get ready for Perris Auto Speedway on the 23rd.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2017.

2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-19, Wins-1, Top 5’s-7, Top 10’s-14.

ON TAP: Richard Vander Weerd will be back in action on September 23rd at Perris Auto Speedway.
