PETERSEN MEDIA- Taking the opportunity to shake down his Trophy Cup ride on Saturday night in Hanford, CA with the King of the West Series, Richard Vander Weerd held his own with a 360ci power plant as he picked up a 13th place finish.

“I got off to a slow start,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “I had not been a winged car all year long, so it took me a while to get going, but once I got comfortable things went pretty well.”

Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe No. 10x machine in 23rd quickest in qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd was in an early hole.

Finishing sixth in his heat race, the Visalia, CA driver got his elbows up in the ‘B’ Main as he attacked an extremely rough racing surface as he worked his way into a transfer spot. Going from eighth to fourth in the semi, Vander Weerd would move into the 30-lap feature event where he took the green flag from the 20th starting position.

With the track slick in the feature, Vander Weerd wasn’t at as much of a disadvantage with his 360ci engine and that showed as he was able to slowly work his way forward.

Working his way forward, Vander Weerd would get up to the 14th spot where he would run much of the race. With the rough surface seeing many of the drivers and teams work their way down to the bottom of the speedway, gaining positions in the latter part of the race would prove to be tough.

Able to pick up one more position in the closing laps, Vander Weerd would pick up a 13th place finish at the 2017 Cotton Classic.

“It was a good night to get re acclimated to the winged car,” Vander Weerd said. “We ran a lot of laps, and I am looking forward to doing it again this week in Tulare, CA at the Trophy Cup.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2017.
