PETERSEN MEDIA: Competing with both the Civil War Series and World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series over the course of the last week in Chico, CA, DJ Netto’s week would be highlighted by a sixth place finish on Wednesday night.
“We had pretty good speed all weekend, and that has me excited for Calistoga this weekend,” DJ Netto said. “Saturday night we were in a good spot, but had some heat race misfortune that ended up putting us pretty far back on a hammerdown track, but all in all there was some good that came from it.”
Taking on the Civil War Series on Wednesday night to open the 64th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions, Netto would get things kicked off by timing the Tri-C Manufacturing/Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain No. 3c entry in 16th quickest in qualifying time trials.
Winning his heat race, the Hanford, CA driver would move into the Dash where a run from eighth to sixth placed him in the third row for the 30-lap feature event. Having a sluggish start, Netto would fall back to the night spot before working into eighth on the third lap.
Spending much of the early portions of the race in eighth, Netto would again fall back to ninth at the race’s halfway point. Continuing to battle in the Top-10, Netto would use the race’s first restart to work into eighth and then take over seventh on lap 21.
A final restart on the 24th lap, would see him make a big move and take the sixth spot, where he would go on to take the checkered flag.
Returning to action on Friday night with the World of Outlaws, Netto would time in 11th quickest in his qualifying flight, which would place him in the third row of his heat race.
Getting his elbows up in his heat, Netto would work from his sixth starting position to finish in fourth which would be good enough to lock him into the 30-lap Gold Cup prelim night feature event.
Lining up in the eight row of the feature event, Netto would battle with the likes of Logan Schuchart, Bud Kaeding, and Mason Moore as they battled for position on a relatively tricky surface.
When the 30-lap affair came to a close, Netto took the checkered flag in the 15th spot.
Saturday night would bring the end of a busy week, and Netto would get off to a very nice start as he timed in fifth quickest in his qualifying flight.
With passing extremely difficult in heat race action, some big time moves would be attempted at times, and a little misfortune would leave Netto back in the eighth spot and in the night’s B main.
Taking advantage of a front row starting position, Netto would pick up the ‘B’ win, and march into the Gold Cup Race of Champions feature event. With the surface still locked down, passing was at a premium during the 40-lap affair.
From his 21st starting spot, Netto was able to work forward a little bit as he closed his weekend out with a 16th place finish.
“We were in an okay spot after time trials, but unfortunately our heat race really ended our night,” Netto added. “I have to thank everyone that worked on our car all week, as well as Clyde and Marion Lamar, and my family, for continuing to let me do what I love.”
