PETERSEN MEDIA: Going toe-to-toe with Michael Kofoid on Saturday night in Placerville, CA, Justyn Cox would come up just short as he finished in the second spot despite a spirited battle with the young driver.

“That was a pretty fun race,” Justyn Cox said. “We hurt a shock battling with him on the cushion, but still we were right there and that is a good feeling, and a good night for our race team.”

Timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31c entry in 11th quickest in qualifying time trials, Justyn Cox would line up on the front row of his heat race.

Able to sneak by Mike Benson in the first corner, Cox would hang on to pick up the much needed heat race win as it made his eligible for the top-eight redraw. With Lady Luck on his side, the Clarksburg, CA pilot would pull the one pill and would lead the field to green for the 25-lap feature event.

With a caution bunching the field up on the 10th lap, Cox would ride the cushion in turns one and two, but as he went to the bottom in three and four Kofoid was able to get a run on him and drop him back to the second spot.

Jumping back up on the cushion the next lap, Cox would get in a little too hard as he chased after the race leader and would actually damage his right front shock in the process. Not letting that slow him down, Cox and Kofoid would wage war on each other for the next eight laps until the race’s final caution flew.

Unable to keep up with the leader on the restart, Cox would hold on to the next spot during the final six laps as he took the checkered with a runner up finish.

“Leading early, both lanes felt pretty good to me but he was able to take advantage of me searching and get the lead from me,” Cox added. “I’m curious if we could have made it an even better race without the shock damage, but still a good run for us heading into the big race weekend back at Placerville Speedway this week.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, EyeLusions, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2017!
