PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting back to Trophy Cup for the first time since 2015, Greg DeCaires knew it would be a tough feat. Fighting hard all weekend long, DeCaires’ weekend would end with a 13th place finish in the ‘B’.
“Trophy Cup is a tough race, and not being there in a few years, we knew we would have our work cut out for us,” Greg DeCaires said. “We did show some speed, we just couldn’t quite make it all come together, but still a pretty fun weekend.”
With 90 cars swarming the pit area for the 24th running of the event, DeCaires opened the weekend up by timing the Dale Miller Motorsports No. 4SA machine in 11th quickest in his time trial group.
Racing his way to a third place finish in his heat race, the Elk Grove, CA driver would just miss out on a transfer to the feature event as he would find himself in the second row of the second ‘B’ Main.
Battling with drivers like Terry McCarl and Ryan Bernal in the semi, DeCaires would finish sixth and the night would come to an end for the Dale Miller Plumbing and Septic/Thompson’s Auto Center/RedHawk Casino entry.
Back at it on Friday night, a rough and heavy racing surface would greet the field and DeCaires’ early time trial spot would not be ideal as he timed in 34th fastest in his qualifying flight.
Working his way from the tail and finishing seventh in his heat race, DeCaires would find himself seventh in the ‘C’ with everything lining up off of Friday night points. From the fourth row, DeCaires would work through the extremely rough conditions and pick up a third place finish, which moved him to the rear of the first ‘B’.
Lining up 22nd in the semi, DeCaires would continue his forward charge as he continued to accumulate Trophy Cup points with every position gained. Still working through a fast a treacherous racing surface, DeCaires would bring his Friday night to a close with a run up to 12th.
Heading into Saturday night’s finale, DeCaires would line up third in his heat race with one final chance to add to his point total heading into feature events. Finishing in seventh DeCaires would move into the ‘C’ Main where he would lead the field to green.
Running second to Landon Hurst, DeCaires would keep his night going, as he would move to the rear of the ‘B’ Main. With the track still fast in the semi, DeCaires would continue to fight for his Trophy Cup life as he would move forward and end his Trophy Cup with a 13th place finish in the ‘B’.
“We raced really well when we hit the track, but the chips didn’t fall for us,” DeCaires added. “I really have to thank Dale and Tara Miller for everything they have done for my family and I.”
Greg DeCaires and the Dale Miller Motorsports team would like to thank Dale Miller Plumbing and Septic, Thompson’s Auto Center, RedHawk Casino, NAAKE Suspension, A.R.T. Speed Equipment, King Racing Products, Smith Titanium, Amerikote, Motion Media Wraps, Hangtown Sheet Metal & Fabrication, Vortex Wings, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Frank’s Auto Body Shop, El Dorado Hills Landscape, Anrak Corporation, and Wesmar Racing Engines for their support.
