PETERSEN MEDIA: For the second consecutive season Justyn Cox was able to celebrate when the checkers flew at the Mark Forni Classic as he defended his 2017 win by surging to the lead with eight laps to go on Saturday night and becoming a repeat winner of the crowned jewel event.
“It was a really good night from start to finish,” Cox said. “We had an awesome racecar in the feature event and it is pretty cool to win the Mark Forni Classic for the second straight year.”
Timing in third quickest in time trials, Cox would line the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31c machine in the second row of his heat race where a fourth place finish put him safely in the redraw.
Pulling the seven pill, Cox would grid the field from the fourth row for the 25-lap feature event on a very slick, but racy Placerville Speedway racing surface. When the green flag dropped, Cox would quickly jump into sixth as the Clarksburg, CA driver was in pursuit of his second win of the season, and second consecutive Mark Forni Classic triumph.
On the third lap, Cox would move into fifth before jumping into third on a lap five restart. Using the bottom of the speedway, Cox would overtake the second position on the sixth lap as he got by Kyle Hirst and set his sights on Shane Golobic.
Keeping pace with Golobic, Cox would continue to run in second until the caution flew on the 17th lap as the leaders were closing in on traffic. A great restart would see Cox win the drag race into turn one as he took over the race lead.
Running a great line that saw him diamond off the Placerville curb, Cox would find grip that allowed him to stretch his lead out in the closing circuits. Keeping the field at bay, Cox would go on to grab his second consecutive Mark Forni Classic.
“Man what a great race to win, and to do it two years in a row is kind of unbelievable,” Justyn Cox said. “Rod Tiner, Jr had our racecar perfect, and it was a fun race to run. The track was really slick, but some rework saw them knock the curb down a little, and I fee like when it is like that we really excel. It was a special night, and I have to thank everyone that makes this all possible.”
The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2018!
