PETERSEN MEDIA- Checking into Tulare, CA for the week for the 25th Annual Trophy Cup, Cory Eliason and Roth Motorsports would have a strong week that saw them finish third in the final Trophy Cup point standings when the dust settled on the wild three days of racing.
“It is great to finish that high up in points in the scheme of things, but it is also a little disappointing to end up third after going into the feature as the high point guy,” Cory Eliason said. “We were pretty solid all week long, we just needed to gain one or two more positions in the feature on Saturday when it was all said and done.”
Eliason made his presence felt when the three-day extravaganza kicked off on Thursday night. Timing the Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/Roth Investments machine in eighth quickest in his group, a fifth place finish in heat race action would force him into the semi.
Running second in the ‘B’, the Kingsburg, CA driver would move into the feature event where he would grid the field from the 20th starting position. Flexing his muscle, Eliason would make some quick moves and find himself in the Top-10 within the first handful of laps.
Using the bottom groove to his liking, Eliason would keep digging and would cap an impressive charge with a fourth place finish in the opening night feature event.
Friday night, Eliason would come out event stronger as he opened the night up by putting the famed No. 83SR entry on top of the speed chart and earning quick time honors in his time trial flight before pocketing a fifth place finish in his heat race.
Lining up seventh in the feature event on this night, Eliason would continue to move forward just like he did the previous night. Slicing and dicing his way around the Thunderbowl Speedway, Eliason capped his night with a third place, podium finish, and found himself fifth in points heading into Saturday night heat races.
Flexing his muscles early on the final night, Eliason would make a strong move late in his heat as he advanced from eighth to finish third and jumped up to high point guy heading into the 50-lap finale.
Getting off to a slow start, Eliason would find himself in a fight to stay on the lead lap as the leaders quickly reached his rear bumper after rolling off the starting grid 20th.
Able to stay afloat, a lap 23 caution turned into the scheduled open-red and it allowed his Roth Motorsports team to make some wholesale changes for the second half of the race as a Trophy Cup Championship was up for grabs.
Coming to life when the race came back to life, Eliason would start marching his way forward as he closed in on the point title with each pass. As he got into the Top-10, Eliason would be within just four points of the top point position which would be two spots on the track.
With track taking rubber in latter stages of the race, that would be easier said than done. Trying his all, Eliason would wind up finishing ninth in the feature event and third in the final points.
“It is Trophy Cup, and it is a tough deal year after year,” Eliason said. “I am thankful that Dennis and Teresa Roth put me in great equipment that had me in contention to win this deal but we just came up short. Thanks to Brent and the guys for their hard work, and thanks to everyone who does their part in making us go fast.”
The Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, Roth Investments, 3H Cattle, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Astro Titanium for their support in 2018.
ON TAP: Eliason and Roth Motorsports will now make their way to Port Royal Speedway in Pennsylvania this Friday and Saturday night for the Tuscarora 50.
